The John Jay French Museum occupies a historic pioneer home from the mid-1800s. One of the town's first two-story homes, it was the residence of wealthy tanner and merchant French, and contains antique furnishings, clothing, and other memorabilia from his life to this day. Its grounds feature French's blacksmith shop, his tannery, and even his privy. The museum lies a few miles north of downtown, near the Southeast Texas Art Council.
